What it All Costs
In 2005 the Gala cost just £8,000, in 2008 it cost around £40,000. This huge leap in expenditure is a result of the efforts to make the Gala a true community event and also ensure that all of the children taking part enjoyed the day.
Inevitably, some of the expenditure is on overheads which are essential to put on any public event such as First Aid, Security and Insurance. The day itself obviously incurs the greatest expenditure. From small amounts such as the £152 spent on van hire to the £2,690 spent on the balloons given to every child who takes part in the parade and the £2,500 spent on bus hire. The "goodie bag" given to every child cost £2,314 last year, with a further £1,567 spent on streamers, flags and hats.
A conscious effort to move towards a healthier picnic resulted in a cost of £6,500 for food. Each of the pipe and brass bands taking part in the parade also charge a fee from around £300 to £600 per band (totalling £2,160 last year) and the additional entertainment, which has proven so popular and drawn more people to participate and spectate, cost £12,000.
